The answer is yes, yes and most assuredly so if like me you have COPD(Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) .Cigarettes are the main reason I have COPD, I started smoking in my early teens and it’s only because of the first bout with pneumonia that I started down the path of giving up smoking
The second bout of pneumonia caused a 7 day hospital stay during which I received lots of steroids to kill the infection. I was then transferred to a skilled care center for a 13 day stay(Which was actually supposed to be 14 days, but why that happened is mostly due to poor record keeping by the facility). There I had to participate in various types of exercise which at the time due to my condition was the last thing I wanted to be doing
After finally getting back to my abode, I received a phone call from the office of the lung Doctor and was given an appointment time to see the Dr. During this time I was most fortunate to be cared for both by my sister and Public Health persons who did various things to aid in my recovery. My sister bought groceries, did my laundry and any other cleaning and most importantly just conversed with me. The public health people(nurses and therapists)made sure I was taking my medicines, had me do exercises(which I still thought was a waste of time) and I even received visits from persons who’s duty it was to bath me.
You never realize how quickly your body can turn on you or how weak you are till you look back and realize it was a real effort just to locate and pick up the phone, or go to the bathroom, or how much your breathing would increase just by lying down to sleep(for a fair period of time I didn’t lie down at the normal pillow height to sleep and instead used 3 pillows)
It ‘s now some 18 months later and largely due to great people at West Coast Therapy( a physical therapy place that specializes in rehabilitating those those whose pulmonary problems for whom MD’s have prescribed exercise, along with medication to control various health problems that I can say that I actually enjoy exercise and show up there 5 days out of the 7 days in a week..
Becoming Healthy
Here are the ABC’s
A= Abstinence
No not that kind. In this case it means restraining from unhealthy things, smoking, too much drinking, etc.
It certainly means actual lifestyle changes, so forget restrictive diets which usually fail in the long run. I can certainly testify to having been on the Stillman Diet
and now weighing almost as much as I did when I started it lo’ these many years later. I like the saying that waist(size) is more important than weight (or put another; way lose the gut). A great read is Intuitive Eating A Revoluitionary Program that Works by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch available on Amazon.com.
B= Be Faithful
A bit of a fudge, but still true and means be faithful to your goal of staying healthy. It does not mean becoming a slave to your goal so don’t beat yourself up for that doughnut or whatever else you supposedly “shouldn’t” have. On the other hand don’t let these type of snacks become the norm as such things could become a nasty habit.
C= Calisthenics
A fancy word for exercise which has to be a part of any program to remain or become healthy. Choose the type that fits you, whether it be running, walking, biking, swimming, dancing, jumba, etc.
It’s a good idea to go some place for the exercise, perhaps even walking to and from the facility, senior center, friend’s house or what have you. In other words fit it into your daily to do list. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Sit on a exercise ball instead of a chair while at the computer. Get up and walk around during commercials on TV (mute the sound too).
Get a pedometer so that you know how many steps a day you’re doing and work yourself up to 10,000 steps. Don’t launch yourself into a program without touching base with your doctor. Don’t push yourself too hard the first day or you will regret it (at the very least have sore muscles).
The best kind of exercise is that which is done daily (or at least 5 days a week) for a total of 30 minutes. Hope you noted that I said total, which can be broken up into 3 -10 minute sessions, even 5- 6 minute sessions, etc. If doing it the sessions way you should get yourself a pocket sized noteboook and write every session down.
While you’re shopping at Sears this year, take into consideration these suggestions so the Chinese don’t get even richer on the backs of Americans, if you can.
Just one more way to take our country back and restore us to prosperity!
Christmas 2011 — Birth of a New Tradition ?
As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods –
merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This
year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine
concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift
giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands.
Yes there is!
It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in
a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone — yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates
from your local American hair salon or barber?
Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some
health improvement.
Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned
detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a
book of gift certificates.
Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down
the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift
receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or
driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.
There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift
certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about
a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this
isn’t about big National chains — this is about supporting your home town
Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.
How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or
motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day.
My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy
who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.
OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin
their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery
and beautiful wooden boxes.
Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at
your hometown theatre.
Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.
Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese
lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about
fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to
burn, leave the mailman, paper carrier, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.
You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our
communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.
Forward this to everyone on your mailing list — post it to discussion groups —
throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city —
send it to the editor of your local paper & radio stations, TV news departments.
This is a revolution of caring about each other. Isn’t that what Christmas is about?
