Learn to Blog

Learning to blog is a process which can happen several ways. One can decide to self-host or use a free host such as Blogger or WordPress.com. Using a free host may be fine depending on your goals, but if wanting to earn income online it is not the best way to and in fact violates there TOS(Terms Of Service).

By the same token Self-Hosting comes with (surprise)both ad and disadvantages. There are a number of steps involved, not all of which will be crammed into a single post both because of the length of this post and that one’s mind tends to glaze over and a step might be overlooked.

It is best not to host where you purchased the Domain Name. But before that it is best to think of what you want to be known as or. As an example you would not get beer(dot)com and expect to sell milk. (As an aside doing (dot) instead of . avoids creating a hyperlink.)After deciding on your new snazzy Domain name you will seek out a Domain Register such as GoDaddy.com which is one of hundreds possible to utilize on the internet. Stay focused when making the purchase as there will be several attempts to up sell you, most if not all are as unneeded as the extended warranty that various retailers try to sell you.

The Domain name web host will give you two (2) name servers write them down(or print them out if you have a printer) as they are very important. Then decide who you want to self-host with, there again you have hundreds of possibility’s in my case I use HostGator and am very happy with them. However do some research as price isn’t the only criteria in fact support when you run into a problem(and believe me the odds are very good that sooner or later you will) . So you could be penny-wise and pound foolish as the saying

goes. Many Hosts such as HostGator make Fantastico a part of your cPanel. Here as part of your set-up with the host you will need to plug-in or otherwise insure that the Host obtains the name servers received from the Domain Register. There is some debate as to the possible security problems surrounding using Fantastico out weigh the ease of use. If you decide to go ahead it is a matter of locating Fantastico deciding which Platform to use WordPress in my case and having it installed in the root(normal default). That’s it for this post, see ya in the nextone
